Professor Alec Cameron commenced as Vice-Chancellor and President of RMIT University in January 2022. Prior to joining RMIT, Professor Cameron was Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive at Aston University in the UK since 2016, during which period Aston was awarded University of the Year by the Guardian newspaper in 2020.
Professor Cameron is a Rhodes Scholar (1986) with a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Oxford University in Robotics (1989). He is also a graduate of the University of Sydney with Bachelors’ degrees in Science and Electrical Engineering, with First Class Honours and the University Medal. His early career involved executive roles at Telstra and Sun Microsystems. Prior university appointments include, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Resources & Infrastructure), University New South Wales (2003-6), inaugural Dean of the UNSW Business School (2006-12), and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education), University of Western Australia (2013-16).
Professor Cameron is a Director of AARNet – Australia’s Academic and Research Network, and a member of the Asia Society Australia Advisory Council, and was elected to the Board of industry super fund, UniSuper during 2024.
